Description:

Narcissistic abuse not only causes emotional and psychological damage, it causes neurological damage called Complex Traumatic Stress Disorder. The trauma of CTSD is different from PTSD, in that it occurs in the relational bond and over time. This means that there aren’t just fight, flight and freeze responses in the body that need to be discharged, there is also shame. Shame has a biological feature to it that doesn’t allow it to discharge. Therefore the treatment of narcissistic abuse/CTSD requires an integrated interpersonal neurobiological treatment to allow it to be appropriately transformed and metabolized.

This is a two-day psychodidactic/somatic group for survivors of narcissistic abuse. This group treatment is based on the latest research in interpersonal neurobiology to help reregulate the body and break down narcissistic abuse’s key symptom: Shame. It will be a closed group that runs for 2 consecutive Fridays. The groups are half psychodidactic and half interpersonal neurobiology group work.

Is this a process group?

No. Telling the story of narcissistic abuse is an important and initial stage of recovery. However, this group is for a stage of treatment that has moved beyond verbal processing.

Am I or is your patient ready for this stage of treatment?

Someone that is ready for this treatment group meets these primary prerequisites:

  • Must be out of the emergency stage of narcissistic abuse recovery
  • Has a foundation of self-regulation skills
  • Withdrawn their feelings of attachment (decathected) from the narcissist – This may be somewhat different if the narcissist is their parent.

In addition, a clinical interview is required before acceptance into the group. This ensures the person is ready for this stage of treatment.
